Arien Muzacz

My main areas of supervisory competence include social justice counseling, substance use and substance use disorders, harm reduction, compulsive behaviors (e.g., pornography), sexuality and gender affirmation, non-traditional relationships (e.g., polyamory, power exchange, D/s), and aging. My supervision experience includes working with postgraduates seeking licensure, licensed professional counselors seeking advanced training, and Master's and Ph.D. students in Practicum and Internship. As a site supervisor at Harlem United in NYC, I worked with interns in social work and mental health counseling and with staff ranging from paraprofessionals in harm reduction and HIV/AIDS support services to staff holding credentials in substance abuse counseling (CASAC) or licenses in social work and mental health counseling. My approach to supervision has been influenced significantly by Hardy & Bobes’ (2016) multicultural relational perspective and by Bernard and Goodyear’s (2019) discrimination model. Within the supervisory relationship, I encourage contextual self-disclosure and authenticity. I support the autonomy and growth of each supervisee by providing a supportive environment where the supervisee’s strengths are recognized and built upon, and where the supervisee is challenged to develop their knowledge, awareness, and skills, especially in the area of social justice competencies. Goals in counseling supervision include improvement in counselor self-awareness, counseling skills, diagnostic assessment, and clinical documentation. Modalities used in licensure supervision include observation of videos, process recordings, chart reviews, case conceptualization, and role-playing. Goals in supervision-of-supervision and supervision of counselor education are set by each supervisee; modalities include live and asynchronous review of videos, case conceptualization, and Socratic questioning. In service of economic justice, I offer sliding scale fees for recent grads and colleagues managing disabilities or chronic illnesses. Colleagues and prospective supervisees may contact me at https://revolutionconsulting.co for supervision, training or consultation services specific to BIPOC and LGBTQ communities in Oregon, or at arien@revolutionconsulting.co for individual and group supervision rates and availability.
